________

* It is kept a few miles outside of the city in a granite tomb, awaiting the day when the Communists fall and Chiang can be returned to the mainland to be buried in Nanjing near his brother-in-law and mentor, Sun Yat-sen. The body of his son, Chiang Ching-Kuo, who followed him as President of the ROC, is also in Taiwan awaiting transportation to the mainland for final burial. The Generalissimo’s wife, Soong Mei-ling, who died in New York, is due for the same treatment, but her corpse awaits it in the United States.

* Though, of course, unlike my colleagues, she would have first encountered a Shanghai inhabited by a great many other people from Taiwan, whereas in the 1980s at least there were at most hundreds—not hundreds of thousands—of Americans residing in or passing through the city at any given time.
